In your screenshot the "Read-only" checkbox is indeterminate because the graphical dialog never sets this attribute on directories, only on files (as the read-only flag has no effect on directories anyway and is repurposed for something else instead), so the dialog pretends that directories can't even be queried for its state. Either way, even if the files inside had this flag, it would only deny 'write' access but wouldn't stop you from opening the file for reading.
WSL2 runs as a VM guest and its access to /mnt/c is only through a filesystem proxy, which runs under your own Windows account and only has the same access as you do – no matter which Linux user does the access. The inability for WSL2 to bypass Windows access controls is intentional (even more so because the entire WSL2 VM is under your control, as that would otherwise turn it into a trivial security bypass).
The file permissions shown for /mnt/c in WSL are meaningless; there's no translation done from NTFS ACLs to Linux ACLs. (It would be a very lossy translation due to several mismatching semantics, anyway – even if you had used getfacl instead of ls -l, some things like inheritance or the 10+ fine-grained permissions cannot be expressed through "POSIX draft ACLs" that Linux implements. Some Unix-like systems implement NFSv4 ACLs which are 95% the same as Windows, but Linux unfortunately does not.)
Trump campaign lawyer Jim Troupis, who helped guide the alternate electors plan, spoke publicly for the first time as AG files more charges.
The day before the contentious 2020 election, Jim Troupis ranked among the most respected attorneys in Wisconsin. Two years after he represented President Donald Trump in his Badger State election challenges, Troupis says he couldn’t find a lawyer to write his estate plan. A lot of the friends he worked with over his distinguished legal career disappeared faster than a lawsuit against a prosecutor.
“Nothing had changed, I had simply represented Donald Trump,” Troupis told conservative talk show host Vicki McKenna Tuesday afternoon. “This has been unbelievably painful for me and my family.”
The pain got worse Tuesday as Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, a highly partisan Democrat with higher political ambitions, announced more criminal charges against Troupis, fellow Trump attorney Kenneth Chesebro, and Trump campaign official Michael Roman. The three men are caught up in Kaul’s politically driven electors prosecution, a last-ditch effort to try to lock up allies of President-elect Trump and send a message that the left’s scorched earth lawfare campaign is far from over.
‘This social media play worked because we talked to very specific niche audiences through the content creators that the public was listening to.’ //
The evolution of technology and media has consistently changed how political campaigns reach prospective voters.
First it was through partisan newspapers and political cartoons. Then came the explosion of radio and television. And now, candidates find themselves navigating the vast Internet landscape in their bid to get voters to the polls.
While the embrace of social media was a notable feature of Barack Obama and Donald Trump’s respective presidential campaigns, the 2024 contest revolutionized the way in which candidates engage new voters across Big Tech platforms. //
Working behind the scenes was Vote4America, a get-out-the-vote venture launched earlier this year that partners with conservative-leaning content creators. In collaboration with these influencers, the group sought to engage unregistered and low-propensity voters favorable to Republican causes ahead of the 2024 contest, such as those who listen to programs about outdoor sports (hunting and fishing) and veterans’ issues.
“This [was] not a ‘Turnout your base’ [election]. This [was] a ‘Go find new voters and low propensity voters and get them to the polls’ [election]. And it was the low-propensity voters that we have been focusing on the whole time, ” Vote4America spokesman Stephen Aaron told The Federalist. //
A post-election Navigator Research survey among 5,000 self-identified 2024 general election voters notably found that a significant percentage of swing voters and new Trump voters received their news from non-corporate media sources. According to a poll summary, “Leading up to the election, 45 percent of ‘swing voters’ and 52 percent of new Trump voters cited getting their news through social media, a far greater share than the national electorate (37 percent).”
“Alternative news sources like social media and podcasts were much more prevalent among ‘swing voters’ (52 percent) and new Trump voters (59 percent) compared to the overall electorate (43 percent),” the summary reads. //
Aaron claimed the biggest hurdle for Vote4America was getting election strategists to understand that it was “low propensity voters [who] were going to swing this election” and “that talking to low propensity voters over social media was going to be the most effective way to do that.” //
The 2024 election “was largely the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon debate, where after that debate, if you could not perform on TV, you could not succeed in politics,” Aaron said. “And what we’re going to see [moving forward] is that if you can’t perform on these long-form, authentic platforms [and] can’t be yourself … you’re not going to be able to perform in politics.” //
“Trump has largely removed shame from politics, and so you don’t have to be quite as concerned anymore about, ‘Oh, am I going to say the wrong thing?'” Aaron said. “There wasn’t one candidate in this election cycle who lost his election because of a one-sentence slip in an interview or on a podcast. So, you don’t have to worry about that anymore. What you have to worry about is: Can you be yourself in front of an unfiltered, raw audience?”
Lawmakers can help to lower long-term interest rates by getting the country’s fiscal house in order and lowering our structural deficit.
Both in his first term and since the November election, Donald Trump has pointed to a rising stock market as an endorsement of his policies. He would be wise to keep his eyes focused on another key economic indicator.
As the Federal Reserve started a round of interest rate reductions, mortgage rates rose again over the past two months. Coming as those locked out of ultra-low rates during the Covid panic face serious obstacles to purchasing the home of their dreams, the development should emphasize to Trump and his team the importance of fiscal discipline in maintaining economic stability for American families.
In the past, the Chinese have exploited US birthright laws by traveling to Saipan, Hong Kong (before it was "rejoined" with Communist China). Today, known as the "birth tourism" industry, pregnant Chinese women travel to the U.S. territory of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) without a visa in order to give birth and claim birthright citizenship for their newborns.
It's time for the United States government to put an end to it.
Wisconsin Republican Rep. Tom Tiffany is raising concerns about the rampant industry, which he says is now operating inside the U.S. Tiffany raised the concerns at a recent U.S. House Judiciary subcommittee hearing.
Since 2009, Communist Chinese passport holders have been permitted to sidestep the U.S. visa requirements to enter the northern Mariana islands through categorical parole.
There are more children being born via birth tourism on the Northern Mariana Islands right now than there are domestic children being born. They don't even have to have a visa to come in here. //
Tiffany was referring to a parole program created by the Obama administration. And the notion that there are more (Chinese) babies being born than there are domestic births on the Northern Mariana Islands is insane — made doubly insane by the fact that Mariana citizens can only obtain temporary visas to visit the United States, and only under various criteria.
isn't the fact that the league is 70 percent black evidence there is no "white privilege" involved in succeeding in it? The WNBA does not and has never discriminated against black players. On the contrary, it has always gone out of its way to highlight them. So where exactly does the "privilege" come in?
Was it when Clark was snubbed from the Olympics despite clearly being better than several players who were awarded spots? Was it when she was flagrantly fouled more than any other player in the league? Was it when she walked into a failing league that no one watched? Was it when the left-wing sports refused to defend her and instead stoked divisions? Was it when WNBA Hall-of-Famer Sheryl Swoopes started a racist crusade against her?
By the way, as expected, Swoopes didn't let up despite Clark's olive branch, suggesting there were more deserving candidates. //
You also can't discuss the WNBA without discussing the financial realities behind it. The WNBA has never turned a profit. Instead, it has subsisted on annual injections of welfare from the NBA. So what exactly was "built" when Clark got there?
That's not to dismiss the other good players in the league because they exist, but Clark did not walk into a bastion of success only to feed off her supposed privilege. If anything, the opposite is true. The rest of the league is enjoying the privilege of having her join them, and that's evidenced by the increased revenue the WNBA garnered, including a new television deal, during the 2024 season. //
Clark's attempt at humility would be laudable if it didn't feed directly into the racial grievance industry that has become so corrosive to society. There's nothing wrong with deferring to others who have come before you, but there was a way to say that without going the "white privilege" route. By doing that, as Swoopes' commentary linked above shows, she's only inviting more criticism. You can never be woke enough, and unfortunately, it appears Clark will have to learn that the hard way.
So, let's talk about the other "must-see" Christmas shows from our youth. These are more of the TV special kind — the ones that typically only aired once per holiday season, and you were SOL if you missed them.
In addition to the airstrikes throughout the depths of Syria, Israel has also reoccupied the Syrian portion of the Golan Heights that it relinquished to UN supervision in 1974 (Netanyahu Abrogates 1974 Peace Deal With Syria and Orders IDF Into Buffer Zone). Possession of Mount Hermon, the highest location of Israel, Jordan, and Syria, increases the early warning Israel will have of missile and drone attacks. It also provides continuous surveillance of the routes used by Iran and Hezbollah to move weapons into Lebanon. This move opens a secure and unimpeded air corridor from Israel to Iran. In the past, Israeli aircraft had to avoid Syrian interceptors and surface-to-air missiles, while Syrian radar provided invaluable information to Iran.
The major accomplishment of these strikes is the disarmament of Syria, and any future regime will have to start from scratch. //
The demolition of Syria's military capability has bought Israel several years of enhanced security and makes any direct action by Iran a decidedly high-risk affair.
“…as a condition of participating in the modern economy, Americans are forced to disclose details of their private lives to a financial industry that has been too eager to pass this information along to federal law enforcement.”
A report from the House Judiciary Committee and Government Weaponization Subcommittee exposed the FBI for abusing the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) to spy on Americans’ bank accounts without a warrant.
“Documents show that federal law enforcement increasingly works hand-in-glove with financial institutions, obtaining virtually unchecked access to private financial data and testing out new methods and new technology to continue the financial surveillance of American citizens,” according to the report.
The Biden-Harris administration waived sanctions on Iran three days after the November election, providing Tehran access upward of $10 billion in once-frozen funds, according to a copy of the non-public order transmitted to Congress and reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken determined on November 8 that "it is in the national security interest of the United States" to waive mandatory economic sanctions that bar Iraq from transferring upward of $10 billion to Iran in electricity import payments. //
Though the first Trump administration did green-light the same waiver—causing tension with some congressional Republicans—it narrowly tailored the waiver to restrict Iranian access to the cash. The Biden State Department tweaked the waiver last year to allow Tehran to convert the funds from Iraqi dinars to euros, then hold those euros in bank accounts based in Oman. Access to a widely traded currency like the euro enables Iran to more easily spend the cash in international markets. Under the first Trump administration, Iran had to keep the cash in an escrow account in Baghdad, making it more difficult to access.

In practical
That said, in practical the FCC is not able to enforce the corresponding regulation and transceivers are freely available.
Still if an unlawful transmission disrupts or interferes with legitimate services or causes an incident, FCC and/or FAA may investigate and take the author to a court.
Bands available to the general public for private/business use

We’ve gone from not trusting the feds to not trusting the local police in Altoona, PA.
But it is just asking questions. Can I ask one: Do any of the people just asking questions have monetized Twitter accounts?
It’s a social media-driven phenomenon. During the Dominion Voting v. Fox News case, we got the inside text messages of Fox News hosts, including Tucker Carlson. It turns out almost all of them thought Trump was full of crap and the “stolen election” stuff was a lie.
However, their public thoughts were more obtuse or contradicted their private thoughts. Surprisingly, people preferred to believe Tucker Carlson questioned the election and had Trump’s back rather than believe his private thoughts conveyed to friends and colleagues that both doubted Trump’s claims and said, “I hate him passionately.”
Now, everybody is just asking questions. It is a clever way of seeding doubt and then watering it.
First, you cast doubt on the local police in Altoona, PA. Or just highlight Mangione’s questions. Then you sprinkle in doubts about federal prosecutors and investigators in something entirely different, tie it all together in the name of just asking questions, and hope your Twitter account is monetized for the traffic.
The Rubes will believe it, hopefully.
Too many are willing to believe it.
In The Abolition of Man, C.S. Lewis wrote about men without chests. But he also had this:
[Y]ou will find that you have explained explanation itself away. You cannot go on ‘seeing through’ things for ever. The whole point of seeing through something is to see something through it. It is good that the window should be transparent, because the street or garden beyond it is opaque. How if you saw through the garden too? It is no use trying to ‘see through’ first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To ‘see through’ all things is the same as not to see.
People just asking questions are not trying to see through things. They are hoping to make you see nothing, so you must rely on them. Too many people are. In the end, we have a nation that trusts no one and nothing and, therefore, is unable to get answers while asking questions.
Luigi Mangione began his descent into rage by just asking questions. He saw through the system and saw through whatever might be on the other side and finally saw nothing except revenge. He explained away the explanation itself and, on the other side, found violence.
Now, people who just a few days ago insisted something must be wrong because the police should have surely arrested someone quickly because look at Lee Harvey Oswald will now question who got arrested because it just seems so damn convenient.
Our society is dangerously close to spiraling out of control. The people who intend just to ask questions are helping sow the seeds, and those who, because of their distrust of “the system,” cannot grapple with basic answers will be the tip of the spear.

It's mindset.
7 uncomfortable truths about US v UK culture:
Alternative multi-APOD front page
The Biden administration has indicted at least 37 individuals on charges under the Freedom of Access to Clinics (FACE) Act. In just over three years, the Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) has accounted for more than a quarter of all FACE Act charges in the law's 30-year history. Notably, this includes the frequent use of a novel sentence enhancement, signaling a weaponization in the application of this law under the current administration.
The FACE Act itself is a prime example of federal overreach and an infringement on First Amendment rights. While the federal law applies both to conduct committed at abortion clinics and at pro-life facilities like pregnancy centers, enforcement has historically shown a focus on protecting access to abortion services. Thus, it has morphed into a tool for the selective persecution of pro-life advocates.
President-elect Donald Trump has a golden opportunity to correct this imbalance. In addition to his commendable promise to address the injustices faced by those involved in the January 6 protests, whom he rightly calls political prisoners, he should extend this mercy to these pro-life activists. Pardoning the twelve individuals currently imprisoned under the FACE Act would not only right a wrong but also send a strong message against the misuse of power by the Biden DOJ.
The repeal of the FACE Act is equally imperative. This law has no place in a society that values free speech, assembly, and the right to protest without fear of reprisal. It's an outdated piece of legislation that no longer serves its intended purpose in a post-Roe v. Wade America, where states are reclaiming their authority over abortion laws.

The command shown in the heading is known as a Bash “Fork Bomb.”
A fork bomb is a denial-of-service attack where a process continuously creates child processes at an exponential rate, consuming system resources like CPU, memory, and process slots, ultimately causing the system to crash. //
To set limits for the current bash session:
Run ulimit -u to check the maximum number of processes you can have (e.g., 30593).
Run ulimit -u NUM, where NUM is significantly lower than your maximum (e.g., 1024).
Setting persistent user limits
The above method works unless the user reopens their terminal and runs the fork bomb again.
To set persistent user limits, add the same ulimit command to your ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile file.
ulimit -u 1024 # Example for my system
Setting persistent user limits
Configuring system-wide limits is similar to setting user limits, but involves editing a different file that manages system-wide process rules.
Typically, you would run sudo nano /etc/security/limits.conf and add the following user limits:
username hard nproc 1024
Remember to replace “username” with the user you wish to limit.
What was missed in almost all the reports covering Salt Typhoon was the FBI’s precise warning. “Responsibly managed” encryption is a game-changer. None of the messaging platforms which cyber experts and the media urged SMS/RCS users to switch to are “responsibly managed” under this definition.
The FBI has now expanded on its warning last week, telling me that “law enforcement supports strong, responsibly managed encryption. This encryption should be designed to protect people’s privacy and also managed so U.S. tech companies can provide readable content in response to a lawful court order.”. //
There are just three providers of end-to-end encrypted messaging that matter. Apple, Google and Meta—albeit Signal provides a smaller platform favored by security experts. These are the “U.S. tech companies” the FBI says should change platforms and policy to “provide readable content in response to a lawful court order.”
This doesn’t mean giving the FBI or other agencies a direct line into content, it means Meta, Apple and Google should have the means, the keys to provide content when warranted to do so by a court. Right now they cannot, Police chiefs and other agencies describe this situation as “going dark” and they want it to change. //
This is a dilemma. Apple, Google and Meta all make a virtue of their own lack of access to user content. Apple, by way of example, assures that “end-to-end encrypted data can be decrypted only on your trusted devices where you're signed in to your Apple Account. No one else can access your end-to-end encrypted data—not even Apple—and this data remains secure even in the case of a data breach in the cloud.” //
The argument against “responsible encryption” is very simple. Content is either secure or it’s not. “A backdoor for anybody is a backdoor for everybody.” If someone else has a key to your content, regardless of the policies protecting its use, then your content is exposed and at risk. That’s why the security community feels so strongly about this—it’s seen as black and white, as binary. ///
Oh the irony! The Chinese are exploiting the very backdoor that the FBI insisted that phone companies had to install, and the FBI is doubling down on having a backdoor into encrypted communication.
