While Mr. Crooks’s motive remains opaque, his online searches reveal someone who was looking for an opportunity to pull off a spectacular attack that would garner widespread attention, by either inflicting mass casualties or killing someone famous. Thus far, that profile more closely resembles that of a mass shooter than a politically motivated assassin.
Starting as a teenager in 2019 through this year, Mr. Crooks progressed from searching “detonating cord,” “blasting cap” and “how to make a bomb from fertilizer” to seeking detailed information about the activities and whereabouts of politicians in both parties. By late 2023, his search history included queries related to Mr. Trump, President Biden and both parties’ conventions, the officials said. //

It doesn’t really matter what his motive was. What matters is how bad the secret service performed. Either they should all be fired for incompetence or arrested for conspiracy
Both she and Joe Biden seem to think the role of the government is to open up the taxpayers's coffers and use the money in giveaways to buy votes. They don't seem to understand that it's the overspending that helped to kick off the inflation that has been crushing people. So, they keep proposing things that will only make things worse. //

For those of us who have criticized Facebook for years for its role in the massive censorship system, Zuckerberg's belated contrition was more insulting than inspiring. It had all of the genuine regret as a stalker found hiding under the bed of a victim.
Zuckerberg's sudden regret only came after his company fought for years to conceal the evidence of its work with the government to censor opposing views. Zuckerberg was finally compelled to release the documents by House Judiciary Committee... //
Zuckerberg stayed silent as Musk was viciously attacked by anti-free speech figures in Congress and the media. He was fully aware of his own company's similar conduct but stayed silent.
When the White House and President Joe Biden repeatedly claimed that the Hunter Biden laptop was Russian disinformation, Facebook continued to withhold evidence that they too were pressured to suppress the story before the election.
When the censorship system was recently put before the Supreme Court in Murthy v. Missouri and the justices asked about evidence of coordination and pressure from the government. In Murthy, states successfully showed lower courts that there was coercion from the government in securing an injunction.
The Biden administration denied such pressure and the Court rejected the standing of plaintiffs, blocked an order to stop the censorship, and sent the case back down to the lower court.
Zuckerberg still remained silent. //

Facebook was not silent when it came to censorship, or "content moderation" as the company prefers to call it. While Zuckerberg now expresses "regret" at not speaking out sooner, his company previously sought to sell Americans on censorship. //
For years, young people have been taught that free speech is harmful and triggering. We are raising of generation of speech-phobics and Zuckerberg and Facebook wanted to tap into that generation to get people to stop fearing the censor and love "content modification." It was time, as Joshan and his friends told us, to "change" with our computers.
Now, Zuckerberg and Meta want people to know that they were "pressured" to censor and really regret their role in silencing opposing voices.
It is the feigned regret that comes with forced exposure.
The Facebook files now put the lie to past claims of the Biden administration and many Democrats in Congress. For years, members attacked some of us who testified that we had no evidence of coordination or pressure from the government. At the same time, they opposed any effort to investigate and release such evidence.
The evidence is now undeniable. //
Jen Easterly, who heads the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, is an example of the chilling scope of this effort. Her agency was created to work on our critical infrastructure but Easterly declared that the mandate would now include policing "our cognitive infrastructure." That includes combating "malinformation," or information "based on fact, but used out of context to mislead, harm, or manipulate."
Consider that for a second: true facts are censorable if the government views them as misleading.
As I write in my book, President Joe Biden is arguably the most anti-free speech president since John Adams. His administration helped create a censorship system that was described by one federal judge as "Orwellian." Vice President Kamala Harris has been entirely supportive of that effort.
In 1800, Thomas Jefferson defeated John Adams in the only election where free speech was one of the principal campaign issues. It should be so again. Harris should have to take ownership of the censorship system maintained by the administration.
George Washington University Law School professor and Fox News legal analyst Jonathan Turley agrees. In a Tuesday column for Fox News, Turley tore Zuckerberg's feigned contriteness to shreds.
For those of us who have criticized Facebook for years for its role in the massive censorship system, Zuckerberg's belated contrition was more insulting than inspiring. It had all of the genuine regret as a stalker found hiding under the bed of a victim.

This blog is reserved for more serious things, and ordinarily I wouldn’t spend time on questions like the above. But much as I’d like to spend my time writing about exciting topics, sometimes the world requires a bit of what Brad Delong calls “Intellectual Garbage Pickup,” namely: correcting wrong, or mostly-wrong ideas that spread unchecked across the Internet.
This post is inspired by the recent and concerning news that Telegram’s CEO Pavel Durov has been arrested by French authorities for its failure to sufficiently moderate content. While I don’t know the details, the use of criminal charges to coerce social media companies is a pretty worrying escalation, and I hope there’s more to the story.
But this arrest is not what I want to talk about today.
What I do want to talk about is one specific detail of the reporting. Specifically: the fact that nearly every news report about the arrest refers to Telegram as an “encrypted messaging app.”
This phrasing drives me nuts because in a very limited technical sense it’s not wrong. Yet in every sense that matters, it fundamentally misrepresents what Telegram is and how it works in practice. And this misrepresentation is bad for both journalists and particularly for Telegram’s users, many of whom could be badly hurt as a result.
Infinite for Loops
You can also use this format of for loop to create an infinite loop. All you need do is remove all of the elements from the loop header, like this. This is "infinite.sh."
#!/bin/bash
for (( ; ; ))
do
echo "Press Ctrl+C to stop..."
sleep 1
done
You'll need to hit Ctrl+C to stop the loop.

Part of the Atlantic is cooling at record speed and nobody knows why
8:18 AM · Aug 23, 2024
It turns out the headline is not entirely…accurate. The temperature drop is part of a climate phenomenon known as the Atlantic Nodal Mode. The pattern is like the Pacific Ocean’s El Niño/La Niña cycles but more localized.
The natural climate pattern swings between cold and warm phases every few years. Sea surface temperatures (SST) in the eastern equatorial Atlantic have a somewhat surprising seasonal cycle. The warmest waters of the year occur in spring, while the coolest waters occur during the summer. //
Perhaps the most significant aspect of the developing Atlantic Niña is its potential impact on hurricane seasons. As hurricanes strengthen in warm waters and weaken in cool ones, this could be good news for Legal Insurrection fans along the Gulf Coast and Atlantic seaboard.

How much income will the national pro-life spokesmen lose now that the abortion issue has been returned to the States, where it should have been all along? //

No, Trump is engaged in an optimization battle on abortion, aiming to minimize harm as much as possible. He doesn’t want to fight an absolute battle, where force is used to impose beliefs, even at the point of a gun. Absolutism may feel morally righteous, but because voters won’t resort to extreme measures, Trump loses, and this ultimately leads to more abortions. Under the current administration, pro-life protesters are being jailed for standing outside abortion clinics.
Choosing the path of optimization may tarnish one’s moral purity, but it saves more lives. If Trump wins, he could pardon these protesters, allowing them to continue advocating for life at the very place where it is most threatened. It’s a difficult and imperfect choice.
God gave us free will, allowing us to choose between good and evil. He could have created a world where abortions never happen, but He didn’t. Without God’s omnipotence and in the presence of free will, I believe the only way to stop abortion would be through force. However, since God chose not to use force and instead wants us to navigate these moral challenges ourselves (with the understanding that He will judge us in the afterlife), I cannot justify imposing my will on others by force. I can guide them toward the truth, but I cannot save their souls for them.
Trump’s approach—optimizing to reduce harm—keeps the difficult conversations alive, increasing the chances that more people will choose life. //

It's also lazy. They want a quick Federal solution so they can bypass the ugly work of fighting the good fight.
There is a real Constitutional question here and they don't care, they want a quick authoritarian fix and are too dense to realize the next Democrat White House could just do the opposite if they set the precedent. //

The all or nothing approach is more likely to achieve nothing than to gain all. Incrementalism on the part of courts and Democrats is what evolved Roe vs. Wade from Safe, Rare, and Legal to Anytime, Anywhere, for any Reason, at Taxpayer Expense. Incrementalism on the part of conservatives, as well as increasing the availability of prenatal and early postnatal care to struggling mothers, is a more powerful approach. Since the battle is now at statehouse, our warriors need to fight there. //

One would have thought that twenty years of deployments and combat would have produced a noncommissioned officer corps as hard as nails. It didn't. The post-Abbey Gate Army noncommissioned officer corps seems more like the one that came out of Vietnam than the one that went into Iraq. Should Trump win, he has his work cut out for him, purging the officer corps of that trash and detritus that gamed its way to the top. He must find a merciless and bloody-minded SOB to do the Army NCO corps what Sherman did to Georgia.

Big news: I messaged @Lowes executives last week to let them know that I planned to expose their woke policies. This morning I woke up to an email where they preemptively made big changes.
Here are the changes:
• Ending participation in the @HRC’s woke Corporate Equality Index social credit system.
• No more donations to pride events or other divisive events.
• Ending ERG groups in favor of one large unifying ERG group for all employees, no longer designed to focus on race or sexual orientation.
They also hint at more future changes. We’re now forcing multi-billion dollar organizations to change their policies without even posting just from fear they have of being the next company that we expose.
We are winning and one by one we WILL bring sanity back to corporate America.
So far you’ve helped me change corporate policy at Tractor Supply, John Deere, Harley Davidson, Polaris, Indian Motorcycle and now Lowe’s. We are a force to be reckoned with. //
That is the beauty of all this. Employees and probably some C-suite junior executives are tracking down Starbuck to let him know about the underhanded inner workings of their companies when it comes to DEI implementation. They reflect the spirit of the age. Hardworking Americans are tired and fed up with having to jump through these DEI hoops while their hard work and company loyalty are ignored or disregarded.
Five House Republicans — Reps. Andy Biggs and Eli Crane of Arizona, Matt Gaetz and Cory Mills of Florida, and Chip Roy of Texas — hosted a panel discussion about the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at the Heritage Foundation on Monday. //
But there were also some fiery moments with podcaster Dan Bongino, who used to be a Secret Service agent, as he lambasted the problems of the agency. He didn't hold back on how grave he thought this was, and he made three points. //
Then he answered some questions from the members of Congress, and he explained that things were now worse under Director Ronald Rowe than they were under former Director Kim Cheatle, who resigned in disgrace after the assassination attempt. //
Bongino warned that more would be coming, "[If] You think this is the last incident, you're out of your mind. We have seen these incidents over and over."
First, "fair share," as defined by whom? Rhetorical question — the Democrat Party, of course. Second, the Democrat Party is incapable of reaching peak wealth redistribution. The left will never reach a point where it believes it is finally robbing a sufficient amount of money from the wealthy to redistribute to the poor.
Never mind that the top 1 percent of earners already pay 45.8 percent of federal income taxes, and the top 50 percent of all taxpayers pay 97.7 percent, while the bottom 50 percent pay the remaining 2.3 percent. https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/federal/latest-federal-income-tax-data-2024/
"Fair share"? Seems to me that the bottom 50 percent of earners need to pay their fair share. //
While the left continues to preach the zero-sum-game mentality, or a "scarcity mindset"; the belief that there are limited resources, so if someone else has something you want, you believe there is less of it for you, conservatives subscribe to an "abundance mentality" — the belief that there is enough wealth, resources, and success in the world for anyone who works to achieve their goals.
Henry Ford famously wrote an autobiography, "My Life & Work":
As long as we look to legislation to cure poverty or to abolish special privilege, we are going to see poverty spread and special privilege grow.
More than 200 former aides to the three GOP presidential nominees who preceded former President Trump in 2016 — former President George W. Bush, former Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) — endorsed Vice President Harris on Monday.
The majority of the group also endorsed President Biden in 2020. The group wrote a letter announcing the endorsement, USA Today first reported. //
If most of these people were already supporting Biden in 2020, then guess what? While they might identify as Republicans, they're supporting Democrats. It tells you a lot more about them. They're not just being anti-Trump -- they're supporting Biden and Harris. If they can support Biden or the radical ideas of Harris, then they're not conservatives, in my humble opinion. Also, this just confirms that there were a lot of people who weren't conservative working for Romney et al.
