Our planet is endowed with extravagantly rich mineral ore deposits. How did we get them and why is it significant? It turns out that the source of these deposits is not indigenous; rather, large asteroid/comet strikes over the past 2 billion years produced Earth’s richest metal ore deposits.
I am a software engineer, and have been for most of my life.
One afternoon I was thinking about my tendency to obsess over minor technical details. I'm not alone in this tendency, but I have no doubt that many others — even some in my profession — view it as a peculiar form of madness. What metaphor, I wondered, could possibly convey why it was so difficult to let go of seemingly-trivial issues?
As it happens, I'd recently been discussing Douglas Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach with a friend. It was that book which introduced me to Zen kōans.
Thoughts collided, and the first of these pseudo-kōans was born. Consider it an experiment: an attempt at merging vocation and avocation. //
Although the title of this collection is a rather obvious play on The Gateless Gate (a historically important collection of Zen kōans), please note that the offerings here are not Zen kōans, nor do I intend any disrespect to practicioners of Zen Buddhism.
The jingling of the door-bell announced four arrivals: a blast of cold December wind; a spray of fine snowflakes borne upon it; the sound of horses clopping up the cobbled street; and two gentlemen. They were good portly fellows, pleasant to behold. The younger of the pair doffed his top hat and shook fresh snow from the brim as the elder consulted a list.
“Cratchit,” read the old gentleman. “Ware-housing, Pawn-brokering, Business Loans.” He looked up to find the sole occupant of the establishment seated behind a large wooden desk: a slight, sandy-haired young man of twenty-odd years with a genial expression. The gentleman adjusted his spectacles. “Have I the pleasure of addressing Mr. P. Cratchit?”
Here’s a very 1960s data visualization of just how much code they wrote—this is Margaret Hamilton, director of software engineering for the project, standing next to a stack of paper containing the software: //
As enormous and successful as Burkey’s project has been, however, the code itself remained somewhat obscure to many of today’s software developers. That was until last Thursday (July 7), when former NASA intern Chris Garry uploaded the software in its entirety to GitHub, //

Re: Makes you proud
The one that gets me is when you find and fix a long-standing bug in some code and wonder how in hell it managed to keep going in its original state for so many years!
You have to tread carefully around those sorts of bugs, just in case it turns out to be a Schroedinbug - and you have just observed that, unfixed, it can't possibly work. Which collapses its wave function and, through spooky action at a distance, every running copy of that program will suddenly stop working!
The fire resulted in extensive damage throughout the bridge, including significant smoke and thermal damage, amounting to $3 million in total. The navigation systems, communication systems, and alarm systems on the vessel were irreparably damaged.
According to the NTSB’s investigation, the fire originated from an explosion of one of the cells in a lithium-ion battery used for an ultra-high-frequency handheld radio. //
Lithium-ion battery cell explosions are commonly caused by thermal runaway, a chemical reaction that can lead to the cell igniting and exploding. Thermal runaway can occur spontaneously if the battery is damaged, shorted, overheated, defective, or overcharged.
To prevent thermal runaways and subsequent fires, the NTSB advises crews to follow manufacturers’ instructions for the care and maintenance of lithium-ion batteries, properly dispose of damaged batteries, avoid unsupervised charging, and keep batteries and chargers away from heat sources and flammable materials.
The NTSB report also recommends that companies ensure that lithium-ion batteries and devices using these batteries are certified by Underwriters Laboratory or another recognized organization.
In the event of a lithium-ion battery fire, crews can attempt to extinguish the fire using water, foam, CO2, or other dry chemical or powdered agents designed for Class A (combustible) fires. If the fire cannot be extinguished, personnel should allow the battery pack to burn in a controlled manner while monitoring for nearby cells experiencing thermal runaway and extinguishing other combustible materials that may catch fire.

Fetterman being unable to process basic conversations wasn’t a redline for the left. But him supporting Israel is. //
Don't worry, I'm not under any illusions that he's not going to royally tick me off with some far-left stance on another issue in the near future. For the moment, I'm enjoying the entertainment value of all this. //
Etb_ass
Fetterman would have to be in the top 5 of least bad Democrats. That is how wretched the party is and how wretched most of their Senators and Congressmen are.
It says a lot more about the rest of the party than it says about Fetterman.
I'm sorry if you "are contending with extensive power outages, food and water shortages, and a breakdown of the medical system." This may be a shock, but you are in a war zone, and unless you brought your own, the person responsible for supplying those items is your employer, not the IDF. It is unfortunate you are uncomfortable, but you are the one who decided to act like a vulture picking at carrion for fame and fortune, and you need to man up and own it.
You, a journalist, are not qualified to use words that have legal meanings, like "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing." These are terms that international tribunals, not reporters, award, and they carry legal consequences. Neither of those is happening in Gaza. Israel has opened a humanitarian corridor to allow safe passage of refugees out of the area of combat operations. Civilians are killed when they choose or are forced to be human shields for Hamas terrorists. //
Being a journalist does not get you immunity from the consequences of being in a war zone. Period. If you are embedded with combatants, you take the risks they take. If you are an active partisan and trying to sway international opinion in favor of a terrorist enterprise, in my view, you've become a legitimate target. And let's not be coy here. Evidence indicates the overwhelming majority of reporters who elect to report from the Hamas side of the battle line are Hamas partisans masquerading as journalists. We know, for instance, that the Associated Press shared office space with the Hamas leadership until an Israeli bomb evicted the lot of them. //
Being embedded with an FBI SWAT team raiding a criminal hideout is a lot different than helping a Mafia hit squad do its work. One is legal, the other makes you a criminal accomplice. No amount of letter writing is going to save the "journalists" who accompanied terrorists, nor should it; //
Finally, journalists are there to report accurately and objectively. It is the job of the senior editors and the publisher to decide what, if any, position the outlet takes on an issue. The idea that you get to use someone else's outlet to push your peculiar worldview shows a stunning lack of maturity.

It's not just evangelicals. One of the weird things about Israel is that you have to view it through a biblical lens or you miss the point. The IDF truly believes its hand is guided by G-d in this war, which means that no one is going to convince the government to stop what its doing, because this is blasphemy, and the Bible is full of people who got bonked for that conduct. Example: tomorrow, millions of Jews around the world will be celebrating Yigal Amir Day. November 4 is the day that Amir executed Rabin for his existential crime against the Jews. As a reminder of what happened, Rabin had succumbed to demands of the Clinton Administration to a cease fire and halt of military campaigns against the PLO, and raised a stink about proportionality and humanitarian "pauses." As a result, Amir, much like Pinchas in the Torah, rose up amongst the Jewish people and slayed Rabin. And the people rejoiced because they had been spared Rabin's ongoing crimes. How is the Biden Admin celebrating this event? By sending the Secretary of State to Israel to the Prime Minister for a cease fire and halt of military campaigns against the PLO, and raising a stink about proportionality and humanitarian "pauses." If you are Bibi, how do you react to the cluelessness of this timing? The Progressives see what Blinken is doing as "progress." The Israelis view it as "sin." If the United States can't figure this out, and figure out how to work around it, which means not trying this foolishness on Nov 4, then we are nothing more than a paper tiger here in the US while Israel remains the lion of Judah. That's why the evangelicals love Israel and the progressives do not. In the old days, this is why I advised political leaders in Washington, because Washington used to know how to listen. Today, its the bull in the china shop and consequences be damned and Amir had to the bear the burden off Clinton's sins.
To examine why this is, and also to assist in understanding why there is such astonishing contempt for Israel among today’s anti-hoi polloi, a brief history lesson. ... //
Considering all the above, it is little wonder that progressives hate Israel and Jews with such passion. Progressives believe they must despise whatever, or whoever, the other side loves. Evangelicals, i.e., conservatives, love Israel and demonstrate no bias against Jews? We must do the opposite! And so, in its zeal to disdain everyone and everything held dear by those believed inferior, progressives have revealed the fatal flaw in their reasoning. They preach love and tolerance yet exhibit neither. Instead, they are miffed to the point of madness by the notion that the God in Whom they seldom believe has deemed someone other than themselves as His elect. As Jesus Himself said to His disciples just before His arrest and crucifixion, ironically speaking of the Jews in the psalmist’s words that today find themselves used against Jews, “They hated Me without reason.” //

Jerry,
While I agree with your basic review of the reasons that evangelicals support Israel, I believe that the progressive opposition to Israel vigorously defending itself runs much deeper than the typical knee-jerk reaction of the progs that whatever conservatives/evangelicals are for they are against. Time and again, the progs have sided with pure evil in all of its forms but have successfully masked their true intent. The attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7 has ripped off the mask. Now the world can clearly see that the progressives stand for evil in the same way that after Nazi Germany attacked Poland the world could see what they were actually about. Progressives hate the Truth because the Truth comes from God whom they also hate. They are against any authority that claims to be above and beyond their reach. If you begin with that premise, it explains much of why they behave the way they do and what groups and causes they support. //

Evangelicals love Israel because of the Bible. Leftists hate Jews because of their "bible," which is Marxism. Marx wrote some of the most vicious anti-Semitic trash ever seen. Conservatives need to read Marx and Satan, by Richard Wurmbrand, a Jew who became an evangelical Christian.

Why Evangelicals Love Israel and Progressives Do Not
Because Evangelicals who have read a bible know that their God is the God of Israel, created for Himself, and it is the Christian church that has been grafted into the family of Israel through the shed blood of the rabbi Christ's sacrifice and not the other way around. Christ didn't do away with Judaic law. He fulfilled all its points so we don't have to. But the standard of accountability is the same now as it was then: mess with Israel, and things will go very bad for you. Maybe not in our lifetime, but God will not be mocked nor tempted for long. If he takes his time with it, it is only to give the guilty a chance to repent before he goes all medieval on them.
Here's Gods take on it. Israelis the olive tree in this analogy.
Romans 11:17 ...
They chose violence. Over and over again.
The scale and catastrophe of what happened is still becoming clear.
Yet the world seems to have moved on.
Already the international media are focused not on the atrocities Hamas committed against Israel but on the response of Israel to the terrorists of Hamas.
Every day the New York Times and other papers give their views on how Israel should bring the war to a draw.
And every day there are protests across the world made up of people who are either evil or ignorant. //
Here, like so many other parts of the community, there were occasional handprints in blood, where people had tried to stand or avoid being dragged in their dying moments.
These imprints should not be forgotten. These were all people who had done nothing wrong. //
Hamas didn’t allow them to live. The world must never forget this.
Israel cannot live with Hamas. The world must realize this.
Uranium mining in the United States hasn’t been profitable since the Russians flooded the global market with predatorily priced ore and processed fuel a decade ago.
Long before, the nation’s uranium enrichment industry, episodically idled by market paralyses and perpetually frozen in costly regulatory entanglements, had fallen into obsolescence.
In 1980, the United States produced and processed 90 percent of the uranium used by 251 nuclear power plants that generated 11 percent of the country’s electricity.
In 2021, only 5 percent of the uranium used by the 55 nuclear power plants operating in the United States—which now generate 20 percent of the nation’s electricity—was produced domestically.
After years of Russian market manipulation stymied profitable domestic production, Congress has responded since 2020 with a series of bills that could, if approved, collectively spend up to $5 billion by 2035 in an attempt to bring a domestic commercial uranium market back to life. //
But unfortunately, there’s nowhere in the United States for Wyoming mines to send ore for enrichment. Nationwide, only one plant in New Mexico has the capacity to enrich uranium for use in commercial nuclear reactors.
“Even if we were mining it now, we’re shipping it somewhere else [overseas] to get it enriched and refined,” Deti said. “When it comes to conversion and enrichment, we have no capacity to do that [in the United States]."

A 2022 paper by Kelly Senecal of Convergent Science and other scientists compares greenhouse gas emissions from plug-in, battery-powered electric vehicles with emissions from hybrid vehicles, which combine internal combustion engines with small battery packs.
The conclusion: Pure plug-in battery-powered vehicles can create more emissions than hybrids and even more than some traditional internal combustion engine vehicles—whose fuel delivery, air delivery, and ignition systems have improved over the past 20 years, increasing overall vehicle gas mileage.
Here’s why. //
Research shows that electricity for battery-powered vehicles is coming from coal and natural gas rather than renewables. //
Seventy percent of the world’s electric batteries are produced in China, and 83% of China’s energy comes from fossil fuels, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
The longer the range of the battery, the more carbon is used in the production process. Senecal has calculated that carbon emissions to produce a battery for a Nissan Leaf were equivalent to driving a gasoline-powered BMW 320d for 24,000 miles. For a larger Tesla Model S battery, carbon emissions used in production are equivalent to driving the BMW 320d for 60,000 miles. //
Those concerned about greenhouse gas emissions may also be worried about the negative effects on the environment of mining for battery components. Such mining, which itself creates emissions, disrupts the land in low-income countries, such as cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where abuses of mine workers and significant pollution from mining have been documented by Amnesty International.
Lithium is another crucial component of batteries, and China, Chile, Argentina, and Australia are home to potentially damaging lithium mines, according to the Institute for Energy Research.
It’s become virtually impossible to find reliable data or polling on gun violence these days. A new Kaiser Family Foundation report being shared by virtually every major media outlet this week offers us a good example of why. The headlines report that “1 in 5 adults” in the United States claim that a “family member” has been “killed” by a gun. And, let’s just say, that’s a highly dubious claim.
There are 333 million people living in the United States, and somewhere around 259 million of them are over the age of 18. Twenty percent of those adults equals nearly 52 million people. There were more than 40,000 gun deaths in 2022, and around 20,000 of them were homicides — a slight dip from a Covid-year historic high that followed decades of lows. So, according to Kaiser’s polling, every victim of gun violence in the past few years had hundreds, if not thousands, of “family members.”
Now, to be fair, we can’t really run the numbers because Kaiser doesn’t define its terms or parameters. For example, what constitutes a “family member”? Is your second cousin a family member? Because if so, that creates quite the nexus of people. What about your stepbrother’s second cousin? Or how about your uncle who died in Iraq? Or how about that grandfather you never met who committed suicide in 1968? Kaiser could have asked people about their “immediate” relatives. The opacity is the point.
Then again, you can always spot a misleading firearms study by checking if the authors conflate suicides and murders. Kaiser does. //
What Kaiser doesn’t mention in its press-friendly “key findings” — and no media piece I’ve read mentions — is that 82 percent of those polled feel “very” or “somewhat safe” from gun violence in their own neighborhoods. Only 18 percent of Americans say they worry about gun violence on a daily or almost daily basis, while 43 percent say they worry about it “rarely” or “never.” So, you’re telling me, half of American adults have personally experienced gun violence themselves or toward someone in their family, but less than 20 percent worry about it often?
Most filesystems do not maintain a directory of where the hardlinks to a file (or more precisely, to an indode) are.
So you'll have to scan the whole filesystem to find all hardlinks. You can do this using
find -inum <inode number>
- NFPA 99 requires special protection against electrical shock in facilities designated as “wet procedure locations.”
- Wet procedure designations are based upon risk assessments that consider types of procedures conducted, electrical equipment deployed and liquid-mitigation protocols.
During a routine arthroscopic shoulder repair, an operating table’s electrical panel short circuited, causing the table to suddenly decline. The surgical team swiftly moved the anaesthetized patient to a transport trolley before concluding the procedure, avoiding a potentially catastrophic outcome.
All this happened while intravenous fluid was leaking onto the floor. Despite mopping and suctioning, the surgical team stood over a wet film of water — a truly hazardous situation.
Electrical accidents within operating rooms are rare. Still, this incident — documented recently in the Journal of Anesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology — demonstrates why electrical precautions must remain ever-present concerns.
